Yeah, go comp!!!!!

Come get fisted!!!!!!! Imperial Fisted!!!!!!

Here we are fresh out of the tournament and ready to spill our guts.  I dont want to spoil the vid so I wont say anything thats inside but we had a good time regardless of how we felt leaving.  I felt horrible on the first day and was in no mood for socializing so I didnt really get to do any networking with some of the other bloggers.  I got to meet and speak with the people that I wanted to on the second day so it looks like I may be getting a little help setting up my painting commissions website.  I have all sorts of furry blurry pictures of the best painted armies at the event that I will display tomorrow or Wed.  I really need a new camera!

The tournament was run extremely well and the terrain was awesome.  I also enjoyed the mission variations!  I have the rewards ceremony taped but its long and boring so if you want it up, let me know and it will be on its way!

This is why comp events are bullshit! subjective and full of shit!

Comp events are more often than not BS due to the subjective.
The painting score seems way off as well.
Oh well....get them next time.
With the Chaos!

With 84 battle points did it really matter that you got bad comp and bad painting scores? Painting was waaaayyyy off in my opinion. My barely finished Iron Warriors army got the same score as your amry, and as the double-raider Shrike army with freehand on just about every model...

Yeah. Didn't make sense to me.

As far as comp goes, taking a special character was -40 points about, and taking a second was -50ish. Add in Da Boyz's hatred of taking multipul units, and your list was spammy, not themed, in their eyes.

I went 2 wins, 3 losses. My wins were strong but with luck in one and good shooting in the other. My three loses were on the othrr hand, devastating. I got tabled, for the most part in all three games. Wiped almost to the man. My last game was against bob evers who won 3rd best painted. He has Vulcan, 7 or 8 assault termies, vindicator, predators and razorbacks. Hands down a stronger list and I think he said he got a 55 comp. Every single opponent I played could not believe my comp after I told them. I played 3 of my scouts in an assault role. 2 in a support/ firingrole. That's WS and Bs 3 with a 4 + save out looking for trouble. I personally, didn't see anyone else running shooty terminators. Especially as the backbone of there army They said there comp judges were experienced 40k players. It's hard to believe that, or if they were competent, that they didn't have something against me personally. That's stupid to say since they didn't know me. If they had met me, I could understand, cause no one likes me after they have meet me. ;)
I guess the point is that I whole heartedly tried to embrace the spirit of their event. I even wrote some prose to fluff out telions inclusion.
A different score would change nothing other than validate my efforts. 68th or 19lth makes little difference except to the pridefull.

Hey Matt, I saw you walking around the event, but didn't get a chance to say hello. Maybe we'll run into eachother next time.

I have two points in terms of painting & theme for you. The total painting was out of 60 points, but for everyone outside of the top 10, you could only get 39. Mid 30's isn't that bad, and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it.

In terms of theme, because I tune into your blog I tried looking for your army, but didn't see it. I'm not sure if there was a problem with where in the hall your army was, or when in relation to finishing games/judging theme took place, but I don't remember coming across it.

Really, that was all they gave you?

Whats up with this event? Shrike being worst then Lysander, a yellow paint job,Terminators, and scout squads...HOW IS THAT NOT COMPY.

Screw comp events, I should have dumped my plans and shown up with my Khorn counts as Logan Wing list, cleaned house, and walk out relishing my comp score of 0, and my 5 wins because this event makes people make bad lists.

The spirit of the game shouldn't be people like you begging and argueing how your wonderfully painted army should get a good comp rating and have a chance at winning the event, your better then that.

What if i may ask was the army that won. Let me guess, a tau army led by the space pope (Aun'va) charging forward into combat without any tanks or battlesuits, oh wait theres a special charecter, and tau have strenth 5 guns, to competitive.

I’m sure there’s someone from Da Boyz that could throw in their opinions on why you got what you got in terms of your comp score, but I thought I’d add my opinion into the mix. I hate to see another gamer have a bad time, so I hope what I say can help. Also, I’m the guy who got the best comp score prize at the event.

To start off with, I think that there are number of factors to consider when thinking about comp. The most important is what one person considers comp isn't necessarily what another will. I think that you may have fallen prey to this Matt.

To alleviate the pitfalls of subjectivity, Da boyz allowed presubmission of 2 lists and put out their comp guidelines. They made it pretty clear that they were not looking for multiples of the same units, and that special characters were frowned upon (both of which you had).

Did you do the pre-submission Matt? If you did and you got a much higher comp score, I'd be mad too.

In terms of what were they looking for? A diversity in units. If you took units that are thought to be bad (in my case rippers, biovores and lictors) they gave points. I knew this because of the pre-submissions & primer event they held a few months back.

Grimnar - Did you attend?

I personally don't think that the event made people take bad lists (of course what you think is bad is pretty subjective as well). I played 5 games with people that I thought had great lists, but that's just my opinion.

Hey crispy,
I wish you would have said hello as I always want the oppotunity to say thanks to readers and contributors.

I didnt pre submit and I take full responsibility for that. they have their justification for the scores as I did have repitition in many units. It leads me to question the reasonign for comp in general. I am assuming it is to try and prevent over powered lists.

Only two of my scout squads were the same and all three 3 storms are the same. I jsut dont feel that is adequate justification in my situation. If we were talking about thunderwolf cav or plague marine spam, I would completely agree. Why would I have a tactical squad, or anything else but scouts, in a reconnisance sp? party. Teleportation seems the quickest way to reinforce that party in the case of trouble.

Crispy,
I appreciate your comments.

Everyone else,
please do not knock Da Boyz as it was a good event, well run, organized with great terrain and top notch armies. Disagree with the concept of comp, but if you werent there leave them alone please!

Our store had a very direct way to calculate comp so it was never subjective. You just followed the formula. You could easily play max comp, or not, your choice! Regardless, some players hated comp as they felt compelled to follow it. Right now we are not using comp at all, but the whiners are not doing any better on their win/loss performance.

What a load of shite. One mans vision of a well comped army is not the same as a well comped army! I mean. IRL, do you send in massive force or one of each unit/tank/uniform variation? Spammy lists are weak in their own ways and dont need some twat to superimpose his vision of the fluff onto it.

Hey Matt,

I feel your pain. In the past I've spent months prepping for tourneys here in the UK only to come away feeling like the whole thing was a complete waste of time.

Haha, I remember getting points deducted at UKGT years ago by Pete Haines because I hadn't read some random half-hidden online errata that totally changed the Chaos Gifts rule and meant I was 5pts over my allowance. So demoralising that I've never been back since.

I'd take a break for a couple of weeks, draw a line under the whole thing and look to your next project.

Sorry to hear you got a bad impression of the event. I was there too (I'm the Tim near the top of the results sheet you posted), and I thought everything went pretty smoothly. I live in Rochester, so I play with Da Boyz quite a bit. Maybe I can help clarify some of your issues:

Comp: First of all, yeah I think you got hosed. I played against a fairly optimized Guard list, and he comped almost 10 points higher than you. Seems fishy. But if you looked at the guidelines ahead of time, they stressed that theme was completely separate from comp. A lot of your complaints seem to be that your army was well themed, which unfortunately had no bearing on comp score. Also in their comp guidelines, the biggest thing stressed was avoiding duplicates and special characters. Since your army was heavy on both, that's probably where most of your score went.

Painting: For whatever reason, painting was very stacked towards getting in the top ten. If you didn't, you ended up in the mid 30s. I got the same paint score as you, and your stuff looks miles better than mine. Hell, the guy I voted for as best painted only got 3 more points than I did.

Fortunately, it seems like the organizers are pretty responsive to feedback. The huge penalty against special characters actually came out of the results of last year's post-event survey. So hope to see you guys next year.

Timbo,
I'm mis communicating if it comes off like I didn't have a good time or if I think it was anything other than a stellar event. The video is 10 minutes post disappointment. I'm probably inter mingling the word theme quite often but there pre tourney comp description also spoke about their desire to see softer lists as they think it makes better generals. I'm going off memory there so excuse me if Im mis speaking.
I'll come back next year, I enjoyed my trip

Thanks for the input

Matt,

I tried to introduce myself a few times on Day 1... now I know why you were looking so beat.

I don't get the knock on your list either. Regarding the painting... top notch. My only regret was I didn't see it after Round 2, when I went voting for Best Painted. I missed it and didn't see it 'till later. I mentioned the work to Goat who said you were setting up a service...

Good luck - you're extremely talented.

I have to say, I wish I'd seen the video before finishing my article on Comp for Bell. You've got a real point I wish I could have mentioned.

Take care - Brent

Brent,
Yeah I apologize, I felt like dirt the first day. Im one of those. If I get a head or belly ache, Im out. It sure doesnt help that I am pretty shy when first meeting people! I appreciate your comment and regret not being more outgoing. Next time!
