Rules Discussion #2 Outflanking chosen

In my game last week I came up with a rules question that I thought someone out there may be able to answer. Watch the video which should be short and let me know what you guys think I am able to get away with ;p

ard boys 09 playtest #3

I hate this, I wish I would have lost the game! I would not have nearly lost as much!

Sorcerer Convertion

Since my wife went away this weekend to see the parents, I had a nice long relaxing weekend at the paint table doing something that I really enjoy, completing a heavily converted fig!!! AHHHHHHH, and on top of all that I CRUSHED, absolutely CRUSHED Khonate Kris on Sunday, look for the battle report on Wed. What a weekend!

Rules Discussion #1 FNP vs. AP3

HI there folks! After talking with Black Matt I've decided to take some time away from the many Seiges I'm running against planets of The False Emperor in order to throw some ideas out there and see what you all think! Today I'd like to throw out a rules query for you all and see where you go with it. I'll hold my personal answer until after some of you have had a chance to post your thoughts! Today's question, "Do Plague Marines get Feel No Pain against AP3 weapons?" The rule for FnP can be found on page 75 of the BRB. The major part of this issue is how do you interpret the part "..and any other wound against which no armour save can ever be taken." Do you take this to mean, 'can never be taken for that model', or 'can never be taken by any model'? Please read the rule over and discuss away!
-Marius Xerxes

Black Matt's Black Guard

I have decided to bring someone on board who will help with a post every once in a while. Introducing Marius Xerxes, the captain of Black Matt's Black Guard. He worked last year on Adepticon rules council and helped write their FAQ in Chicago. He really know his stuff. I have asked him for his opinion on a couple of issues and we came up with the idea of having him write a post here and there to examine some of the controversial rules. We wont always agree and we hope that you wont either. Feel free to speak up and question our take on the rules. Look for Marius Xerxes to tell you how it is soon!

vs. Autarch Andrew

While Eldar souls are particularly delicous, that is only if you get to devour them. Out of the Wilds of Pennsylvania rode a lone wolf. A usurper bent on my crown of Warmaster at the Battle for Salvation club in White Plains, NY. Did this abomination xenos take my talons of Horus?

I have to give the credit of the idea behind this list to Fritz and Brother Captain James. Much more likely Fritz came up with the idea while James was picking his nose imagining new creative ways to piss me off. Spawns, that was the basis of the whole army. I didnt have the balls to go completely spawndom but the basis is there and I am sure that you will see a lot more of it, with Imperial Fist proxies of course. Enjoy the Eldar souls and Death to the False Emperor!!!

P.S. Good Job Andrew, mad respect for PA

Exile

Well guys this is going to be the last time that you see the rhinos until I am finished and am ready to debut the completed army. I still will be doing all things chaos, but I dont want there to be a lack of the "WOW" factor when I go for a best painted probably at Adepticon next year! So this pic is a little tid bit of what I am trying to do with the rhinos. Its the Khorne rhino with a refit after the kid sent it flying through the air a few weeks ago. Enjoy and Death to the False Emperor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the right choice????

Guys, I wont do this often but when Doug wrote in with this email, he gave me an opportunity to address something. Something that would be hard for me to address without the question being asked. What army would I start that is both fun and competitive?
"Black Matt,
Greetings....I found your blog thru "Yes The Trust Hurts>>>Bald & Screaming website"...then posting there...to you...Anyway....I love your painting and the conversion work on your chaos mini's. The Obliterators look sick. great job. So i have been watching the videos that you have posted, and i have been following 'Ard Boyz lists etc...and I just started back playing in the new 5th edition rules. I have about 5 games under my belt with my old space marine army (painted pre-heresy world eaters). The figs and paint job is about 3-4 years old, so I want to start fresh with a new list and army and then sell off my old army.I do believe that your advice is very solid, that you should really have a roughed out plan for your army, and then start putting it together, paint it, and amend it on the fly when needed.
So with that ammo I am working on a new 40k army. But, I am really torn in a few different directions, and I was hoping that you could help push me in the right direction. I want a functioning army being able to be played solid at 1750, and then having the opportunity to get more disgusting as the points increase. For this new army I am pretty much starting from the ground up (new figs, paint scheme). I currently have a decent amount of regular space marines ready to assemble and paint. I know that I am going to play some type of space marine, and I will either go Chaos or Loyal to the Emperor. I am looking to get a base army of 1750..and then go up from that as needed.I could really use your opinion and 40k experience to maybe give me some more insight on an army to be used for both fun and competitive play. I realize that playing in a tournament is a totally different mindset, I know I played in the first GT in Baltimore, and I played in the GT at games day about 4 years ago. any army would be a great foundation even if i switched a few things around for more fun type games. I also feel that I want to take my time putting together the models, converting, and painting. There is no reason to rush doing work on an army to not be satisfied with the end result.
So 'Ere We Go'....What are your thoughts on the following lists....
For the Loyalists:For the few games I have under my belt I have been playing Stelek's 1750 "Best of" list. basically it is the Master of the Forge, Telion, Snipers, 3x Dreads (MM/CCW), 3x Tactical Squads (Flamer, MM, Rhino), 3x Dakka Preds, and 2x squadrons of 2x Land Speeders (MM/HF). Pretty tight list...gets the job done. The army has a ton of meltas in it and everything in the army is a threat.I have been talking with Khornatedemon thru Dakka Dakka, and his Salamander list looks very good. I was really happy to see that you have played him in your club (which I really must try to hit since i live on long island). Having Vulkan in a list giving you rerolls is excellent. The list does suffer from the "all the eggs in one basket".His list is roughly:
190 – Vulkan,
200 – 5x Assault Terminators TH/SS,
250 Land Raider Redeemer (240 +10MM),
105 – Dread MM/CCW,
105 – Dread MM/CCW,
210 – Tact. Sq. Meltagun (+10), MM, Rhino,
210 – Tact. Sq. Meltagun (+10), MM, Rhino,
210 – Tact. Sq. Meltagun (+10), MM, Rhino,
140 – 2x Speeder (+10MM, +10HF),
140 – 2x Speeder (+10MM, +10HF)
Chaos:The Nurgle list really fascinates me. Playing against my one friend who uses plague marines. The plague marines are the best troop choice in the game. 3+ armor save followed by the 4+(i think) invul save. They are a tough bunch to get off an objective, or try to hurt in close combat. The list I would model would be the one from your site. it is a rock solid list. Basically your 1750 Lash list. And finally the Khorne 1750 List. I used to play a Khorne army during 3rd edition. I caused a lot of fear when that army hit the table. I am a fan of both shooting and close combat. Land raider spam can be a lot of fun, i think there is also a possible list here running with rhinos. I fear that the same problems with the bezerkers that were in 3rd & 4th may still be true. No good anti-tank weapons...
So with those 4 choices, what do you think...If you were starting an army from scratch and looking for fun (where people don't continuously calls you Cheesy) and the ability to be competitive....what would you start. What do you recommend.
Thanks for your time, Doug.

Doug,
If I was building an army with the current codexs to fulfill all of your needs I would use the space marine codex and build the list around Vulkan. With tanks running around all over the place, his value is obvious. Another reason that I would build it around him, is the flexability in the possible builds that you can come up with. Khornate Kris is working on a biker/Land raider melta heaven list that is ard as nails! Another build with the same character is "Its raining meltas!" Drop pods with melta guns that land and blast! You could incorporate some Way of Saimhann tactics with a bunch of Land Speeders using Meltas and Flamers. If you take Vulkan, you can make almost any build work to fill what it is you looking for. Im not giving my opinion on which one of these is a stronger build, I am just pointing out that if you dont know exactly what it is you want, Vulkan provides it regardless!
On the other mutated Chaos hand, I would put Vulkan's head on my pig pole and go for the Khorne list. I love the fearless beserkers and with the abundance of elite, fast attack and hvy choices I dont see there being a problem with anti tank! Skulls for the Skull throne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, not nearly as flexible or powerfull, but really fun! Death to the False Emperor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well Doug, thats what I think! I hope it helps.

The other Heavy Meat

Well it should be pretty obvious what my favorite Heavy Support choice is from the mighty tome of Chaos. Obliterators are diverse, powerful, hideable, teleportable, and worth every point. But they are not the only HVY SPRT choice. I was talking to a friend who is considering getting into the hobby and he asked me why take Obliterators compared to the Havocs. And I replied in my best comic book guy impersination, Obliterators are the best Hvy Sprt choice ever! I still stand by that but lets look at some of the other heavies. Havocs!! - to devastate, to create ruinous damage. Ahh how appropriate!

I hate to say it but I think the best place for this heavy is in a fluff army. Death Guard immediately comes to mind since you can take special weapons as well as Heavy Weapons. In fact, this is about the only combo or build that I think would be worth it in a competitive game. 4 meltas in a minimum squad of Kamakazi chaos marines with a rhino to get them to the Land Raider full of Hammer Termies. However, I do this with 5 meltas in a outflanking squad of chosen for just another 3 pts per model.

The squad can start to get expensive if you take 4 lascannons and 10 chaos marines at 290 pts. Especially marines who arent fearless or cant regroup if they fall back below half strength. And thats without a rhino. A rhino? Yeah, if you can take a rhino for 35pts, you should. Use it somewhere else! As a empty decoy along side full rhinos, or as mobile cover. And dont you EVER take a champion in a havoc squad. EVER! If you do and I find out about it, I will tell Abaddon on you!

4 lascannons is taking the expensive extreme but if you want to mix in other weapons you start to loss some punching power. A mix of anti tank and anti infantry would reduce the effectivness your unit has. It is best to try and decide what the unit will be used for before the game. In a well balanced army, a Chaos Lord will have the ability to deal with both armour and mobs of infantry, but not necessarily with the same unit. Im not calling anyone out if you mix your havocs, Im just saying that I think they can only really fill one roll.

Death to the False Emperor!!!!!!!!!!!!

ard boys preliminaries results 09

It was an excellent day on Saturday when Brother Captain James, Ultrabob, and myself drove to the Warsmith store up in Hartford, CT for the Ard Boys Tourney. I took 1st, James took 3rd, Ultrabob took 4th. Ultrabob may advance through default due to the fact that the person who took 2nd most likely will not be able to be in the country on that date. Alex the English is going to help represent England in the European Championships in Germany on that weekend. Good Luck Alex!!!!!!
5 out of 6 Battle for Salvation Club members made it into the Semi-Finals. If Alex cant make it, that is 6 out of 6, our club is ARD!!!!!!!

Final thing, one big shout out to the Warsmith club up in Hartford. Not only did the owner give us free turn counters for driving all the way up from the city, but he treated us great the whole day. Check out http://www.thewarsmith.com/

Final ard boys list for Round 1

Well, Brother Captain James, Ultrabob, and I are off to ard boys tomorrow. We are traveling two hours north into the wild of Connecticut. There are several Battle for Salvation members in the ard boys tourney. So many in fact that we have decided to spread out as thin as we can. I have made one adjustment to my final round 1 list. I took out one of the elite choices, 5 man chosen squad with meltas all round, and but in a small bike squad and a ninth obliterator. Good choice, bad choice, I dont know until tomorrow. I havent but as much effort as I normally would when going into these bigger tourneys where I want to do good. Normally since I know what the missions are ahead of time, I would tweak my list to be as competitive as possible. Right now, I am kind of just going with what I have.

HQ X 2 Sorcerer Lash with Meltabombs, P. Icon 260
Troops X4 7 man Plague Marines, 2w/meltas, rhino w/DBldes 884
troop 5 man PMarines, 2w/meltas, rhino w/ DB 175
Elites X 2 5 man chosen 4w/ meltas, 1w/ Melta bombs
Rhino w/ Db, combi melta 370
Hvy x 3 3 man Oblit squad 675
Wish us luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Space Wolves rumors

They have been pretty much confirmed as an early october release with the preview coming at GD UK in late September there supposedly will be a box set like the DA veteran one that will have 2 sprues full of wolf bits including a rumored sprue with supposedly 30 different head options. This will be used like the DA one to convert standard marine units to their wolfy counterparts like dev's to long fangs. There will be an HQ that rides a giant wolf that is supposed to be bigger than a juggernaut. He is named Lord Canis Wolfborn and is supposedly on the trade sales order form in the marine section and listed at $41 for a box set.Space wolf lightning claws are called wolf claws and will let you choose to either re-roll hits or re-roll wounds with them. Depending on when this choice has to be made they could be sick, ie if you can choose to re-roll hits after you roll initially.Supposedly characters will be customizable like "the WFB vampiric powers" for VC. What this means is beyond me, but we could see wolfen characters, terminator characters or whatever that maybe dictate the army comp. Another possibility is that they cant get upgrades like the old chaos codex like extra strength or speed or something.Frost blades are now just relic blades

Hurr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been thinking a lot about what it is that this blog should be about. It has changed a lot for me since the first time I did it back in Jan/Feb. It used to be about winning! Both on, Best General, and off the table, Players Choice! Fritz, the master tactician, advised me in the ways of subtle suggestion. You see, I didnt just build this army to try and win at the GTs, I also built it to make another run for Players choice. Players choice is a popularity contest! I know, that seems stupid but it is. I got so many compliments from people at the GT saying that they would vote for me in Players choice but they already promised their buddy that they would vote for him. So how does writing a blog better your chances for player's choice? The more people who see your army, the more people who will recognize it. And in the end you have to ask for people's vote. Is that shallow? I didnt vote for myself in my Players choice win, but I asked my friends, the three who went, if they would consider voting for me. That is if they thought I deserved it.

So what is this blog about now and why continue to do it.

After reading the Standard Bearer in the last White Dwarf, I realized what my Blog is about my experiences in 40K as I see them now.As a 9 year Veteran with limited success towards the goals that he set for himself, Im in it now, for the community. The Battle for Salvation Club is kinda wierd in that several of us have succesfull blogs.

And believe it or not after this long unfocused rant, this post is about introducing another club member with his own set of skills. Fritz has his tactics to stand on, Jawaballs tells everyone how awesome he is, Micho is a masterfull modeler, and I tell everyone how they are doing everything wrong . We call him Dan Da Spoiler! Not the despoiler, but Da Spoiler! And thats because if he isnt in the top three, he is busy knocking the rest of us out. Danny Internets, as he is known online, plays to win. Not at all costs, not at the cost of his opponents enjoyment, but if your playing him, he is thinking about beating you. He enjoys the competitive aspect of the game. He is probably the best player that we have at the Battle for Salvation. Check him out at http://www.baldandscreaming.com/ I was originally going to take an opposing viewpoint to one of his posts but this quick post turned into the longest post I have ever written. So tell me what you think about his blog!!
